treeluvPosted by Roger Rempel (Winnipeg, Canada) on 30 November 2008 in Cityscape & Urban. winnipeg is fighting a battle other north american cities have already lost - a battle to save a mature elm urban forest from dutch elm disease. diseased trees are marked with orange paint by city forestry , then cut down over the winter. some anonymous soul has been decorating these diseased trees with a fond thank you and farewell.. i can empathize... cities without lush trees tend to look like.. ..parking lots. my office is located on broadway, a street in winnipeg renowned for a thick lush avenue of elms. this decorated tree is only 1 of 2 remaining in front of my office.. others all lost to the elm bark beetle.
